Japanese breadcrumbs, commonly called panko, are an ingredient used in cooking to bread and fry foods. It is distinguished by its light and crispy texture, obtained by coarsely ground white bread crumbs. Panko is commonly used to create a crispy outer layer on dishes such as fried fish, shrimp, vegetables and meats. Compared to traditional breadcrumbs, panko absorbs less fat when frying, resulting in a lighter, crispier texture.
